Crystal Buckeye
To the people of Ohio the buckeye is more than a humble nut.
We carry them for good luck, we wear them on game day, their images are placed
on our clothing. The buckeye is our state tree. Our buckeyes carry good
memories and deep meaning for us.
They are an interesting nut, in their shapes (unique), their
colors ( a beautiful, shiny mahogany), and in their design which was named
after a buck’s (deer) eye. Every year the buckeye tree blossoms and then little
by little the buckeye nuts, usually, three, encased in a thistle-like covering,
grow to maturity and fall to the ground.
One can buy all kinds of buckeye jewelry but have you ever
seen a crystal buckeye? That was the question that inspired the crystal
buckeye design. A buckeye tree was planted in our yard each year as our
son, Dan, received a letter for playing football at The Ohio State University.
We now have three huge buckeye trees and tons of buckeyes. We used these
buckeyes as moulding shapes to make the sterling silver and cubic zirconia
covered buckeyes.
A toothpick, glue and rhinestones were used to see what they
would look like. That took an entire day.
This led to hiring a master jeweler who could handcraft our
vision. We chose different colors for the body and eyes of the buckeyes. The
bail was chosen so any silver chain could fit through it, and it carries the
mark ( )-our secret. Crystal Buckeye Necklace
But the real purpose behind creating buckeye bling was to
support the non-profit charity, “Beyond The Goal Line”. It’s purpose is to
carry on the promise that The Ohio State University makes as in “summer’s heat
and winter’s cold, how firm thy friendship Ohio.”
A charity that understands when the football game playing
days are over and real life storms hit, there will always be a helping hand for
it’s football players from “Beyond The Goal Line.”
