Laphroaig cask strength batch 15

Whisky or Whisk(e)y is a spirit made from grain and stored in wooden barrels. The grain is mashed (i.e. the grain is crushed and mixed with hot water so that the grain starch is converted into sugar, from which alcohol is later produced) and then distilled. Maturing in barrels for at least three years gives the finished whisky its golden-brown colour and also plays a major role in determining its taste. The alcohol content of whisk(e)y is at least 40 % vol. Laphroaig cask strength batch 15

Whisky or whisk(e)y?

Whether you write whisky without or whiskey with an e depends on the origin of the drink. In the USA and Ireland, it is usually whiskey with an e; in contrast, whisky in Scotland, Canada, Japan, Germany and thus most other whisky-origin countries is almost always spelled without an e. Often the different countries also have different raw materials and production rules, but these cannot always be clearly related to the different spellings. In the following paragraphs you will find all the important information about the different types of whisky and whiskey. Blended scotch whisky

Whisky varieties (by grain):

There are different designations depending on which grain the mash, and thus the alcohol, comes from:

Malt whisky comes from 100 % malted barley or barley malt. Malt whisky is typically produced in Scotland.

Scotch whisky as a single or blended malt consists entirely of malt whisky - and a large part of it as blended Scotch.

Grain whisky literally translates as grain whisky and in Scotland refers to everything except malt. Mostly wheat is used nowadays, but corn and unmalted barley or rye can also be used. Although there are also individual high-quality (single) grain whiskies, the bulk of the production is used as a cheaper filler for blended whiskies.

Bourbon whiskey originates from the USA. Here, at least 51 % of the mash must consist of corn. The rest is usually barley malt (malt), rye (rye) or wheat.

Rye whisk(e)y is mainly distilled in the USA and Canada, although the name is not a protected designation of origin. The prerequisite for rye in the USA is that the mash must consist of at least 51% rye, while in Canada the term is also used as a synonym for Canadian whisky, which sometimes has a lower rye content.

Corn whiskey is also typically North American and is made from at least 80 % corn.

Which grain is used for the production is decisive.
